Lost Lake-Wyoming Hike #76
This August my family and I went on a 21 day road trip. We stayed in Idaho Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I wish we had spent less time in Yellowstone because it was so crowed. We still enjoyed it, but not like the first time that we went 11 years ago. From Grand Teton we then camped in Curt Gowdy State Park between Laramie and Cheyenne Wyoming. This way we could visit my Aunt and Uncle, and still do some climbing at Vedauwoo.
We met my Aunt and Uncle at the I-80 Lincoln Memorial Highway rest stop, which has a Lincoln Monument and the best rest stop to get out and explore. I highly recommend that you do explorer it if you get a chance. We wanted to get an early start because a storm was supposed to move in in the mountains later that afternoon.
We loaded into the vehicles and headed to the Snowy Range which is past the tiny town of Centennial and past a ski area further up the mountain. The drive was quit a bit of distance but since the speed limits are 70 or 80 miles per hour it doesn't feel like the drive lasts forever.
This is a popular hike as you can see in the picture below of the parking lot. There are 2 pit toilets (I found it interesting that the outhouses never stunk because people put the toilet lids down.) and no running water. Make sure to bring sufficient amounts of water with you.
Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash.
The views of the first lake were spectacular before we even hit the actual trailhead.
There is a picnic table as well and some benches.
People were fly fishing, which I really want to learn how to do.
On our way. I was in the rear all for the whole hike because I was taking pictures and enjoying the views.
This was a rocky section in the beginning.
I love this hike!
Sometimes the sky looked like you were going to walk right into.
The trail is really easy to follow since it is single track in most sections,
like the picture above.
Miss A who loves to hike, just wasn't enjoying it that day, she kept saying she was tired and her feet hurt. Which is unusual for her, she will go forever without complaining and gets upset if I go hiking without her.
Make sure to bring lots of bug spray. There are a bazillion!
Another of the lakes that you pass along the trail.
If I remember correctly this is lake number 3 along the way. I lost count and quit taking pictures of the lakes at number 5
Cookie was so happy to be hiking. She was cooler and could actually get out of the vehicle. We didn't get to do any hiking in Yellowstone because dogs aren't allowed on the trails. And unless you have a camper, trailer or RV to keep them in, it isn't worth bringing dogs along.
We don't have rocks like this on any of the trails that I have been on in Washington. The color is spectacular.
Two different views of another lake.
I caught up to the others at this point.
The boys did an amazing job and were way ahead of us, in the picture above is when we caught up to them.
The clouds were starting to moving in at this point.
Cookie never ever leaves my side or goes very far in front of me. Even if I tell her to go get the others.
Cookie did catch up to the others, only because I did, and Miss A is telling me that she itches and can't go on much longer.
He has to climb everything, I mean every single thing that looks climbable.
For how many cars that were in the parking lot we didn't really run into gabs of people.
Such a beautiful area.
Hi boys.
Made it!
We stopped and enjoyed the view of the lake and ate some snacks because we were hungry. While snacking Auntie told us that someone had brought a small boat up and had it anchored to one of the shores. But it broke loose from its original location. Who carries a boat up to an alpine lake? and it wasn't one that is inflatable.
H climbed on the rock so he could be out of the way and off the trail.
Uncle stopped a few times to take pictures along the way, and Miss A wanted to help Uncle at this point. She pointed out the flowers that she thought needed their picture taken and helped him with a few other things. She was very happy to help.
Daddy had to carry her across on our way back to the parking lot. He also had to carry her across it on our way to the lake.
A moody scene.
Cookie who as I stated before doesn't leave my side....well for 2 different couples she ran right up to them. The one couple was just finishing eating their lunch and she climbed right into the mans lap! We were so surprised, she has never ever done that before! Shortly after the clouds opened up and it started to hail, and it hurt.
On our way back to my Aunt's and Uncles' house we saw that cars were stopped along the side of the road; (now I had been groaning about the fact that I hadn't seen any moose thus far on our trip; was very disappointed actually.) Thankfully B turned around and stopped so I could get out and take pictures from behind the truck and at a safe distance away of these 2 bull moose!
I don't remember how many miles we did, but it was a shorter hike and the elevation gain wasn't that much either. But you are already up so high normally you don't even notice the elevation gain on this hike. This is by far one of my favorite hikes and I am so thankful that we were able to go with my Aunt and Uncle and for their invite!
Until next time!
