Spada Lake South Fork first Overlook #36
Just so you know all of our hikes happen on a Saturday (Sabbath) because it is the only day in the week that I don't work and my friends don't work, which makes blog posts a once a week happening.
But this last Sabbath we went to Spada Lake. We wanted to do an easy hike because on Sunday I had a half marathon, and my oldest and his friend wanted to bring their bikes. (My oldest has been trying to bring his bike on a hike forever.) So we loaded up the car and headed to Monroe to meet my friend R and his daughter. Once we met we headed straight to Sultan to meet my other friend and his daughter. It took forever to get through Sultan and I even took one of the short cut routes. I don't know why the last few Sabbaths it has taken so long but it has literally almost doubled our time in arriving at our destination. It tooks us almost 2 hours to get there.
To get to Spada Lake take Highway 2 east, go through Sultan and when you come to the light for the Sultan Basin Road turn left. Follow the Basin Road all the way to a dirt road. Go up the dirt road and register once you come upon a sign with a map and registration box on the right hand side. The area to pull off of the road is a decent sized parking area. Once you have registered go right out of the parking area and bare right to follow the dirt road to the parking lot for the South fork. The road does have some washboards and some spots are narrow, so be careful.
We finally arrived to a very large parking area with a pit toilet, (which was very clean for a pit toilet...if you know me, you know how much I detest them....well maybe abhor them is a better way to describe it.) There is to the right of the pit toilet a trail that leads down to the lake if you want to see it. There is no swimming allowed in the lake just so you know.
It felt so nice to get out and finally stretch our legs! But before we started I insisted that the girls stand still so I could take a picture of them in front of the sign/building.
plus a picture of the thrilled teenager boys with their bikes.
After the picture taking we headed across the parking lot and to the trail head.

The trail starts off nice and flat and shaded. I was kinda hoping to see some wildlife but that didn't happen with 2 little girls a long and one of them liked to scream. The boys on the bikes took off and left us in the dust.
The girls were quite excited about getting to cross the little foot bridge.
Then the trees open up and you arrive upon these. I am not sure on what to call them....mounds of soil? Whatever you want to call them they made for some great riding according to the teen boys
and where rather fun to run down and up as an adult.
The next thing we came to was a dried up river bed, which had some logs that the kids had to walk across and climb on. Because who doesn't love to do that?
The trail then becomes this again after the dried up river bed,
and leads you right up to the beaver dam/pond. Which to get to the trail you have to walk on top of the beaver dam. Miss A was to scared to go across by herself and didn't want to get wet, so I ended up carrying her and getting muddy wet feet. Oh well.
A short walk and incline later you come to the overlook on your left hand side with 2 picnic tables, a rock to climb on and views like this.
It was so nice and we stayed for sometime enjoying our water, snacks, each others company and the conversation. Which is what makes hiking so great; spending time with friends in nature. The hike back was nice and this time one of the adults and the youngest boy decided to wade across because it was so hot. Miss A crossed the beaver dam by herself so my some what dry feet didn't get wet again. It was a wonderful day and lots of fun and a very easy hike to do. I forgot how nice it was and will go back sometime again soon. Maybe we will see you out there?
