Vesper Peak #59
My husband and I decided that we would try and get one more hike in before our backpacking trip and before my brothers wedding. We both knew that things were going to get busy and we wouldn't be able to get away/find the time.
B decided that we were going to do a more difficult hike for me to train on....if I am honest all of the hikes that I had done previously weren't that difficult, and he wanted me prepared to hike lots of elevation gain while carrying a heavier backpack. So Vesper Peak it was.
We left earlier in the morning to beat the heat, but it was still warm when we arrived at the parking area. Side note: There is a pit toilet but it is disgusting, I almost threw up walking into it. Also there is no area to get water, except for some places a long the way that you can collect and purify the water.
Shortly after passing the "toilet" there is a river crossing,
in fact there are 4 river/stream crossings if I remember correctly and the distance between each one is not that far.
The above picture was taken while we were hiking and shortly after crossing all of the rivers.
Walking through the giant scree field was rather scary to me. It didn't feel stable at all and it was so large.
We only have to hike clear up to the top of that ridge line over there.
Looking back on what we climbed up. In the picture below Cookie was so hot she just laid down, which she doesn't ever do. It was so hot, and the next time it is that hot she will stay home.
"Hello down there!" See what I mean by he is such a faster hiker than me?
The views were spectacular and there were hardly any people out. In fact most of the people we saw were while we were hiking out. Which it was super hot then.
Yay made it to Headley Pass finally!
The picture below is looking down the other side of Headley Pass. Again another scree field to traverse.
This picture is looking across to Vesper Peak, the "trail/path" is to my right.
I personally don't recommend brining dogs on this hike. When we go back we won't be brining Cookie with us. She was so hot at this point that we only went to the lake under Vesper Peak and turned around. She would stop any time that she thought that there was enough shade to cool her off. We knew she was really hot when she on her own accord went and laid in any little bit of water she could find, and she absolutely hates being in the water. We stayed at the lake for about an hour, ate, then headed back down. It was an enjoyable hike and the views were amazing! Plus it was nice to spend time just the 2 of us and the dog.
Until next time!
